Thomas Edison is arguably the greatest inventor in American history. Not only did he invent many devices himself but he improved on others helped make major industrial progress. If Edison had not been born who knows how long it would have taken for another to come along reach the accomplishments he did.

Edison was born in Ohio in the mid 1800s he was the last child in his family. He moved to Michigan when he was young was interested in science from a young age.

While the invention most remembered from Edison is the light bulb many people don't realize just how much Edison did. In the United States alone he had 1,093 patents to his name that does not include the patents he registered in Europe.

Edison did invent hundreds of "small" things but his work went far beyond that. He played an integral part in the application of electrical grids modern telecommunication. Edison was directly involved in manufacturing electricity through the operation of a few power plants.

An interesting story show of Edison's character is how he dealt with rival Nikola Tesla. During the time Tesla worked for Edison there was some turmoil especially when Edison offered Tesla a $50,000 reward for completing extremely difficult work. After working hard on it for months Tesla came to claim his reward was met with Edison's comment that it was all just a joke but Tesla's work wasn't .

Edison was a strong proponent of direct current electricity while Tesla favored alternating current which does happen to be the more efficient way of transporting electricity long distances. This was the chief reason they disagreed so much although Tesla did end up winning the Edison Medal which is the most prestigious medal in the electrical field.

In regards to the light bulb specifically it perfect example of Edison's determination. He had to try thousands of different filaments to find the one that worked properly but it was only after he patented his initial light bulb that he found a much better filament which was carbonized bamboo.

As for philosophical beliefs Edison was a peaceful man who believed in non violence the power of nature. There are dozens of Edison memorials in existence as well as businesses named after him. General Electric one of the largest modern corporations was founded by Edison his contributions to humanity will never be forgotten.
